Steel Works

People around here know steel takes a beating. The mine dust, the temperature swings between winter mornings and summer afternoons – regular steel work doesn’t last. We’ve pulled apart too many gates that looked fine but had rust eating through the joints after just two years.

Our steel works cover residential, commercial and industrial projects. Last year we fabricated the entire security perimeter for a logistics warehouse near Krugersdorp Game Reserve. The owner wanted something that could handle truck impacts without constant repairs. We used 50mm box section with reinforced uprights every 2 meters. Three years later, still solid.

Steel Fabrication

Steel fabrication means taking raw materials – your flat bar, angle iron, box section, tube – and turning it into finished products. We work from technical drawings or we can design based on what you need.

Our workshop has a 3-meter guillotine, pipe bender, and a drill press that handles up to 40mm holes. For precision cuts we use a plasma cutter. Most fabricators around Krugersdorp outsource their cutting, which adds days to every job. We do it in-house.

The shopping complex near Coronation Hospital needed custom window bars for 47 windows, all different sizes. Steel Gate Repairs

Gates fail in predictable ways. Hinges wear out first – usually the top hinge on heavy gates. Then the latch mechanism stops aligning because the frame has sagged. If you’ve been forcing your gate closed for six months, the posts have probably shifted and need re-setting.

We fix about twelve gates every week across Krugersdorp and surrounding areas. Most repairs take 2-3 hours on site. Common problems we handle:

Hinge Replacement: When your gate drags on the ground or won’t close properly, it’s usually the hinges. We replace them with heavy-duty options rated for the actual gate weight. Standard hinges from hardware stores are rated for 50kg. Most security gates weigh 80-120kg. Do the math.

Frame Straightening: Posts shift over time, especially in the clay soil around Krugersdorp. We dig out the posts, re-align everything with a laser level, and set them in concrete mix designed for our soil conditions. Let it cure properly and your gate will outlast the house.

Automation Repairs: Automated gates are convenient until they stop working. We fix motor mount issues, realign limit switches, and replace worn gears. We work with Centurion, ET, and FAAC systems mostly. If your gate opens but won’t close, it’s almost always the limit switch position.

Rust Damage: Surface rust you can treat yourself. When rust has eaten through the tubing or weakened joints, you need sections replaced. We cut out the damaged parts and weld in new steel. Then treat and paint to match.

A client in Mindalore had an sliding gate that hadn’t worked in three years. Previous owner said the motor was dead and they needed a whole new gate – quoted R35,000. We checked it out. Motor was fine. The track had dirt buildup and two wheels were seized. Cleaned the track, replaced the wheels, adjusted the limit switches. R2,800 total. Gate works perfect now.

Steel Staircase

Building codes changed a few years back and now external staircases need proper engineering. Can’t just weld some steps together anymore – it needs to meet SANS 10082 standards. We work with a structural engineer who signs off on all our staircase projects.

We’ve installed steel staircases for:

• Workshop mezzanine access
• Fire escapes for commercial buildings
• Access stairs to flat roofs

The steel staircase at the Paardekraal Monument visitors center? We did that installation. Required hot-dip galvanizing because of weather exposure and the historical site regulations. Took eight weeks from design to completion.

For residential projects, most people want something functional but not industrial-looking. We do open-tread designs with wooden treads on steel stringers. Looks clean, meets code, and costs less than a fully enclosed staircase.

Treads get made from 50x6mm flat bar with checker plate welded on top for grip. Stringers use 200mm channel. Handrails must be 900mm-1000mm high with balusters spaced so a 100mm sphere can’t pass through – that’s the child safety requirement.

A family in Range View needed stairs from their back patio up to a second-floor deck. The architect’s original design used concrete, but the foundation couldn’t support the weight without expensive underpinning. We redesigned it in steel. Total weight dropped from around 2,000kg to 400kg. Installed in three days instead of three weeks. Saved them about R45,000.

Welding

We do MIG, TIG and arc welding depending on what the job needs. Most of our work uses MIG because it’s fast and gives clean results on mild steel. For stainless steel railings or aluminum repairs we switch to TIG. Arc welding still has its place for thick structural work and field repairs where you need penetration.

Our welders are all certified and we follow proper safety procedures. Welding creates fumes, UV radiation, and fire risk. On-site work needs fire extinguishers, welding blankets to protect surrounding areas, and proper ventilation.

The quality of a weld determines how long something lasts. You can’t see a bad weld until it fails. We do visual inspections on all welds and non-destructive testing on structural work. The welds on your gate might not be life-or-death, but the welds holding up a mezzanine floor absolutely are.
