Why Gates Break Down So Often in Krugersdorp

Living here for almost 10 years, we’ve noticed specific patterns. The dust from the mines in Randfontein drifts over during winter months. This fine dust gets inside your gate motor and battery terminals. By July and August, we’re doing 3-4 battery replacements per day just in the Sterpark area alone.

The summer thunderstorms are even worse. When lightning hits somewhere near Crestfield or Radiokop, the power surge travels through your electric fence and fries your circuit board. Last December, after that massive storm knocked out power near Quellerie Park, we fixed 23 gate motors in one weekend.

Your gate isn’t broken because you bought cheap equipment. It’s broken because Krugersdorp weather is hard on electronics.

Same Day Gate Repairs – No Call Out Fees

Here’s what happens when you call us:

Within 15 minutes – We answer your call (not a call center). You speak directly to Johan or Petrus, and they’ve both been fixing gates since before smartphones existed.

Within 2 hours – Someone arrives at your property. We keep parts for Centurion D5 Evo, Gemini DC Slider, ET Nice, Hansa, and Dace motors in our van. About 85% of repairs get done the same visit.

Within 30-45 minutes – Your gate is working again. Most problems are simpler than people think.

We don’t charge you just for showing up. You only pay if we fix something.

Real Prices for Gate Repairs Krugersdorp

People always ask “how much?” on the phone, and we get it. Other companies hide their prices until after they’ve already driven to your house.

Here’s what we actually charge:

  • Battery replacement: R1,850 (includes 7AH battery, fitting, testing)
  • Remote programming: R350 per remote
  • Circuit board repair: R2,500 – R3,200 depending on damage
  • Motor replacement: R4,500 – R6,800 (Centurion or Gemini)
  • Full service & inspection: R850 (we clean everything, grease tracks, check alignment)

These prices are for Krugersdorp, Kagiso, Mindalore, and Mohlakeng areas. If you’re further out near Hekpoort or Tarlton, there might be a small travel fee but we’ll tell you upfront.

Common Gate Problems We Fix Every Single Day

1. Gate Opens But Won’t Close (Or Opposite)

This happens constantly in the estates around Featherbrooke and Ruimsig. Your remote works one direction but not the other.

Problem is usually the limit switches. These small switches tell your motor when to stop. Dust gets in them, or they vibrate loose over time from the gate banging. Sometimes its just the antenna wire that fell off inside the box.

We carry replacement limit switches for every major brand. Takes about 20 minutes to diagnose and fix.

2. Gate Moves Super Slow Then Stops

If your gate started moving slower and slower over the past few weeks, that’s battery failure. Batteries last about 2-3 years in Krugersdorp because of the heat. When temperatures hit 35°C in January and February, it cooks the battery acid.

By the time you notice the gate struggling, the battery is already giving less than 40% power. We test it with a proper load tester (not those cheap testers from Game). If its below 11.8 volts under load, it needs replacing.

Pro tip: If you live in security estate like Crestview or Wilgeheuwel where there’s lots of load shedding, your battery works harder. Replace it every 2 years instead of waiting for it to die.

3. Remote Stopped Working Completely

Before you call us, try this: Stand right next to the motor box (not by the gate). Press the button. Does it work?

If yes, your remote battery is weak. If no, then either:

  • The remote got wet (happens all the time in summer rain)
  • You accidentally hit the wrong button sequence and locked it
  • The receiver board inside needs replacing

We can reprogram remotes on the spot. We also sell genuine Centurion, Gemini, and ET remotes (not the cheap copies from China that stop working after 3 months).

4. Gate Doesn’t Respond At All – Dead

This one scares people but its often the easiest fix. Check three things:

First – Is the green light on inside the motor box? If theres no light at all, check the breaker inside your house. Someone might have switched it off by mistake. We get called out to Roodekrans and Discovery at least twice per week for this exact thing.

Second – Was there a power surge or lightning? If the light is on but nothing moves, the circuit board probably got fried. This happens alot near the Mogale City offices and Chamdor during storm season.

Third – Listen carefully. Do you hear a humming sound when you press the remote? If yes, the motor gears are stripped or jammed. If no sound at all, circuit board is finished.

5. Gate Opens By Itself Randomly

This freaks people out, especially in the evenings. Your gate just opens on its own while you’re watching TV.

Usually its radio interference. Someone nearby (could be 2 or 3 streets away) has a remote on the same frequency. Or there’s a fault in your electric fence energizer sending signals to the gate receiver.

We have special frequency scanners that detect whats triggering your gate. Then we either change your remote frequency or install a interference filter. Costs about R1,200 for the filter and programming.

Areas We Cover in Krugersdorp

We service the entire Krugersdorp municipal area, from Magaliesburg Road all the way to the R28 near Randfontein.

Main suburbs we visit daily:

  • Muldersdrift (where our workshop is located)
  • Krugersdorp CBD and Monument area
  • Noordheuwel and Sterpark
  • Wilropark, Wilro Park Extension
  • Kenmare and Westbury
  • Roodekrans and Roodekrans Extension
  • Honeydew Ridge (technically Roodepoort but we’re close)
  • Featherbrooke Estate
  • Ruimsig and Ruimsig Country Estate
  • Crestview and Crestfield
  • Mindalore and Tarlton
  • Kagiso and surrounding townships

If you’re in a security estate like Clearwater, Cradlestone, or Blair Atholl, just give us the gate code when you call. We visit these estates multiple times per week.

Brands We Specialize In

Centurion Gate Motors

About 60% of homes in Krugersdorp use Centurion motors. The D5 Evo is everywhere – its the silver box you see on most sliding gates. Good motor, but the D5 boards are sensitive to lightning.

We stock D5 Evo circuit boards, batteries, remotes, and replacement motors. We’ve probably fixed more Centurion motors than anyone else in the West Rand.

Gemini DC Sliders

Popular in newer estates around Silverfields and Wilgeheuwel. These are battery-powered motors (they dont need mains electricity). Great during load shedding but the batteries die faster.

We keep Gemini spares in the van because these motors need special parts that Builders Warehouse doesn’t sell.

ET Gate Motors (Now Called Nice)

Common in older properties around Monument and Krugersdorp West. The ET Nice motors are reliable but finding parts is difficult because ET stopped making them years ago. We have connections with suppliers who still stock the old ET circuit boards and receivers.

Hansa and Dace Motors

Less common but we still see them in some homes near Top Star Drive-In area. Dace motors were popular in the early 2000s. Parts are scarce but we can usually repair the existing boards instead of replacing the whole motor.

Why Choose Custon Gates for Your Gate Repairs?

We’re not the cheapest option in Krugersdorp. There’s guys on Facebook Marketplace who’ll do it for R500. But here’s what you get with us:

Real experience – Johan started this business in 2015 after working for a big gate company. He got tired of watching them overcharge people for simple fixes. Petrus joined in 2017 and handles most of the estate work.

Honest diagnosis – If your gate only needs a R350 remote, we’re not going to sell you a R6,000 new motor. We’ve had customers thank us for NOT selling them unnecessary stuff.

Quality parts – Everything we install has a warranty. The batteries are genuine Deltec or Ritar (not those cheap batteries that leak acid after 6 months). The remotes are original brand remotes with proper encryption.

We answer our phones – Call us at 6am or 8pm, someone picks up. We know gate emergencies dont happen between 9 and 5.

Local knowledge – We know which streets in Krugersdorp have power surge problems. We know which estates have tricky access procedures. We know the security guards at most complexes because we’re there so often.

Preventing Gate Problems Before They Happen

Most people only call us when their gate is completely broken. But you can avoid alot of emergency repairs with basic maintenance.

Every 6 months (we recommend March and September):

  • Spray WD-40 or Q20 on the rail where the gate wheels run
  • Check that the motor box isn’t full of spiderwebs and dust
  • Look at your battery terminals for white crusty buildup
  • Test your backup battery during load shedding

Once per year (usually best in October before summer storms):

  • Get a full service done (we do this for R850)
  • Replace your battery if its older than 2 years
  • Check that your surge protector is still working
  • Program a spare remote and keep it inside the house

After heavy storms:

  • Test your gate immediately
  • If it works but seems sluggish, call us for a quick check
  • Don’t wait until it stops completely

The worst gate repairs we do are always the ones where people ignored small problems for months. A R1,200 circuit board repair becomes a R6,500 motor replacement because the damaged board destroyed the motor gears.

Emergency After Hours Service

We know gates break at inconvenient times. Last month we got a call at 10pm from a family in Silverfields who couldn’t get their car inside. Their gate remote stopped working while they were at Pick n Pay.

For genuine emergencies (you’re stuck outside your property or cant close your gate), we offer after hours callouts:

Weekdays after 6pm: R500 callout fee + repair costs
Saturdays after 1pm: R650 callout fee + repair costs
Sundays and public holidays: R850 callout fee + repair costs

The callout fee covers us driving to your property and diagnosing the problem. Actual repairs are priced seperately.

If its not a real emergency, we can usually schedule you for first thing next morning and you save the after hours fee.
